Apple pressing at Brookfield

We had a fantastic afternoon at the Brookfield parent’s day today, pressing locally picked apples and pears with the kids. It was a great and fun way to teach children about local and seasonal food, and it tasted far better than the juice from the supermarket.  Everyone loved the juice, and many people told us about trees they knew of that weren’t being harvested. Hopefully next year we can make a map of the fruit trees in Dartmouth Park, pick lots of fruit and make better use of it. We also gave away most of the fruit we had left at the end – I think quite a few people are having apple crumble tonight in Dartmouth Park.

We’re planning to do more events at Brookfield in the Spring Term, which will be a great chance for the kids to learn about living sustainably. So far we’re thinking about growing food in the school and maybe even making something bicyle-powered.
